(AFP) — Unos 19,000 hipocampos deshidratados fueron decomisados en el aeropuerto parisino de Roissy, anunció este lunes la dirección de aduanas.

Los animales, transportados en estado de deshidratación, fueron descubiertos en un envío comercial proveniente de Madagascar y con destino a Hong Kong, precisó la dirección de aduanas. Su valor es de cerca de 200,000 euros.

Unos días antes, el pasado 15 de enero, los servicios de aduana encargados del control de viajeros interceptaron 112 hipocampos muertos en las maletas de una pareja proveniente de Shanghai, indicó la dirección de aduanas.

Según sus declaraciones, los hipocampos iban a ser utilizados para realizar caldos para bebé. Los animales fueron decomisados y las personas encausadas fueron objeto de una multa.

Los hipocampos están protegidos por la Convención de Washington sobre comercio internacional de especies de fauna y de flora amenazadas de extinción, por la destrucción de su hábitat o la caza.

Los hipocampos son utilizados en la medicina tradicional china, que les atribuye virtudes terapéuticas y afrodisiacas, o son secados para venderlos a los turistas.

La incautación de los 19,000 hipocampos es la más importante de ese tipo en el aeropuerto de Roissy desde 2005, cuando 35,000 hipocampos fueron descubiertos, provenientes de Conakry, Guinea, y con destino a China.
